Stuff I Need for my Freshmen Trip

Postby shipinabottle on Wed Jul 09, 2008 7:59 am

Alright, so I want to make sure I get everything I need for this trip, and all my subsequent outdoor escapades. So anybody who wants to contribute a basic list or whatever of what someone should take. I'm aware that it'll vary slightly from trip to trip, but I imagine some of the basic elements are the same. I put down 3 of the backpacking trips as my choices, still waiting to see what I'm officially on. Feel free to add recommendations or whatever for different stuff. Thanks.

As a side note, I'll be working w/ the VA Youth Conservation Corps from July 20th to August 9 and won't be online during that time, so that's why I'm trying to plan ahead.

Note to Colum - if you're going to steal someone else's gear list, you should at least change the file name.

I jest of course. I graciously passed this list on to Colum...it worked pretty well for my last freshman trip so I figured I would spread the love. :D

Revisions or questions are welcome.

could i reserve an nhoc sleeping bag (if you can still do that)? looking into bags today, but i'd sorta like to see what's best for nh and buy something up there as opposed to buying something down here in virginia. then i could talk to you guys and figure out whats best. i did get hiking boots today though, as a side note.

Once we have the final trip attendance sorted out, we will send you a packet with a form that you can send back requesting certain gear (plus a medical form and stuff). Sorry...I think this is a bit of a cumbersome process, but that's how it is at the moment. But yeah, you can request all you want on here and we'll make mental notes!

Make sure you wear those boots around to break them in.

Hey ship!

As for as sleeping bag goes the club does have some but they are...how should i put it...a little antiquated?

The basics of a solid backpacking sleeping bag for 3 seasons up in New Hampshire are pretty simple

You're looking for a bag thats rated to at least 20 degrees, that packs up pretty small and is lightweight ( i would say under 3 lbs but others might stipulate you can go a little heavier) Plus a 20 degree bag will keep you warm even on really cold winter nights if you're staying in the cabin.

I personally use a 20 degree bag from a company called campmor (www.campmor.com) its a down bag and whats awesome is that it's pretty inexpensive but i don't have any complaints about this bag other than it only comes in one color (purple haha)

Marleigh,

You don't have to bring like whole meals for yourself, when the leaders go shopping for the groups food we'll be able to accomodate you..besides other than like beefy jerky and pepperoni we won't have any meat with us. Trust me you won't go hungry! lol

Feel free to bring a few granola bars or cliff bars for yourself though. We'll be getting these sorts of items too but having your own stash is nice.
