Summer Trip Ideas

Postby EricGotthold on Fri Nov 23, 2007 8:22 pm

Chris mentioned a couple trips in another thread that might be good summer trips. Notice I didnt use the word "freshman trip" because I think opening up summer trips to other students is a swell idea.

Anyway guys feel free to use this thread for august trip ideas from the very general and untried to specific trip itineraries.

For starters I think a week on Vermont's Long Trail would be pretty nice. Also a canoeing trip of some sorts in the Finger Lakes might be cool too.

I think the Long Trail is a great idea. The Finger Lakes sound cool, but there are some great canoe trails in the Adirondacks as well. I went on one five years ago. There were a lot of portages, but it was a great time. For a beginner canoe trip, the Connecticut River would be great. I did a week long trip on it a few years ago; it was pretty easy and a lot of fun. I have the itinerary from the trip if anyone is interested. I'm going to try and post it up soon. Looking through some of the past freshman trips, I found that there were a lot of climbing trips; a few to NH and one to NY. There was also an easy backpacking trip over the Carter Range. I'll try and post some of these trips as well.

A float down the Connecticut River

Postby DanBro on Mon Nov 26, 2007 1:57 pm

For anyone who's interested in the Connecticut River canoe trip I mentioned, it was something like this:
Put in at Dodge Falls Hydro Access in Ryegate, VT
Camp at any of the sites along the river, depending on how far you canoe each day.
Take out at Wilder Boat Launch in White River Junction, VT
The total trip is 54 miles, and when I did it, it took six days, including the drop off and pick-up. The canoing is fairly easy; there are no rapids, and a decent current the whole way.

Thanks for digging up those past trips Dan.

I think an easy way of creating more trips is to just have two groups start at oppisite ends of a hiking trail.

Like the POINT-P Trip..( Peacing Out In The - Prezies Trip) is a trip that can be done going the oppisite direction.

those are some pretty awesome summer trips. A few that i've done in the past are all over the place. But my favorite one was done 2 summers ago. I went backpacking on North Manitou island which is part of the sleeping bear national dunes out in michigan. The island is completely back country camping and has a good amount of trails on it. It's a 28 mile loop around the island which is relatively flat there are a few places w/ some gnarly hills and dunes you can climb but it is pretty easy overall. When i was out there my cousin and i hiked the entire loop in 3 days and spend 1 day just hanging out at our campsite on the beach. As far as camping goes, there is an established base camp about 1/4 of a mile from the ferry dock that is called the village. there are campsites and fire rings there. But once you leave the ferry dock and ranger station area you are allowed to camp anywhere you want as long as you are 300 ft away from the water. In terms of hiking you can either hike the trails on the island or the beach in some places, and then meet back up with the trail and campsites.

I think that this would be an awesome freshmen trip. drive out to sleeping bear national dunes, explore the dunes which are on the main land and pretty awesome, (sledding down the dunes is an experience in itself since it is almost vertical. ) catch the ferry out to North Manitou go backpacking for a few days, catch the ferry back, and do things along the drive back to unh.

Penobscot summer trip

Postby ChrisD on Fri Jan 04, 2008 8:58 pm

Day 1-Meet at UNH and travel up to Maine, camp at Hidden Springs Campground in Milinocket Maine.
Day 2-4-Canoe W. Branch of Penobscot. On the river it is first come first serve on the campsites along the river, there are a lot of nice sites and there are a few that would work perfectly. This trip uses an outfitter to give canoes and provide transportation, which could be cut out maybe with additional planning. The night of the 4th day is at Hidden Springs campground again.
Day 5-7- Hiking the AT/ camping at Baxter State Park. The hiking is easy hiking until day 7 which is a summiting of Mt. Katahdin, which is an awesome and hard hike as well.
Day 8- Travel back to UNH for night at Boulder Field.
This trip is an awesome trip, not overly hard except for maybe Katahdin, but for a lower price would probably need to be reworked in order to make it a bit cheaper, I am going to be bringing up a folder with a lot of my info and former trips in it so if you want to take a look at that or I have pictures for this trip at http://troop1narragansett.redgalaxy.net ... itemId=216, which is the gallery for my boyscout troops website. Anyways thats the overall basics of the trip, its a really fun trip, I know I enjoyed it a lot.

What happens to the canoes when you're done with the canoe portion of the trip? The outfitter takes them back with their own vehicles?

yeah that was the good part about the outfitter, because they gave us the canoes, which i know the club is short off as well, they drop us off and pick us up. And then drive 60 mph down the logging road and almost get killed by the logging trucks, but it worked well with the outfitter
