Freshman Brainstorming Meeting Results

Postby DanBro on Tue Nov 20, 2007 7:37 pm

Judging by the use this category has gotten, either people don't have any ideas, or are not quite sure what it is about, (I hope I haven't offended anyone). I thought I'd open it up with a few ideas. Chris, Eric, Maddie, and I were talking the other day in Williamson (I believe Chris might have mentioned this in one of his campaign speeches), and had a few ideas for the club.
1) Offer some type of lecture series, where mountaineers, thru-hikers, and any other interesting outdoor types come and give presentations. This would be similar to what Mark Synott was going to do. I found info in the office about a similar series the club used to do in conjunction with the AMC.
2) Work to revive Bloo Circle for next semester. There was one planned this semester, but only a few people showed up. The idea would be to attract passive members, and show them how cool we really are.
3) One long-range goal we have is to somehow offer trips over winter/spring break. Winter break might be hard, but there are several clubs on campus who offer trips over spring break, and many other outing clubs do it as well.
4) Offer back-to-school trips for current members, similar to Freshman trips. We talked about allowing current student to fill openings on freshman trips, but were undecided, feeling that it could change the feel of the trips if we did that.
I was wondering what other people thought of our ideas, and if they had any to add to the list. An input would be gladly welcome.

I definitely think we should revive the bloo circle, and I would be willing to get this done with the help of some other people. I think it would definitely be beneficial to the club and there are so many things we can do and it would all be fun.

As we have had several good ideas, I felt it necessary to come up with a name for our meeting, and any more we have in the future. We will, therefor be known as the Freshman Exploratory Division of the NHOC, or FED for short. :D

Haha I'm down with FED, and yes I definetly want to be involved in this. Spring Break trips and upperclassmen summer trips would definetly be great for the club.

Between the brainstorming of Aaron, Dan, Eric and I we were thinking of how to get more freshmen to join the club and do freshmen trips. Unfortunately I have hit a bit of a road block in ideas of how to advertise. I have sent a few emails to the person in charge of freshmen orientations and unfortunately in the process of being fair, we cant have information put into the folders and other things like that. Although we do have a brochure in the visitor center and grant house.

She recommended that if anyone was interested in being a orientation leader that is a great way to advertise, cause you can shamelessly throw NHOC plugs at the incoming freshmen. This is obviously a big task and thus unlikely, but if you are interested I have the forms needed.

The other thing is on the second day of orientations there is a resource fair (or something like that) that clubs can set up a booth and talk to incoming freshmen. For me there was a booth, but no info and no one to talk to. I would think it would be definitely beneficial to have someone at these events, and I will certainly work my way up to at least one of them. The dates are June 3, 6, 10, 13, 17, and the 20th

Otherwise if you have any other ideas of how to get information please let one of us know.

Hey Chris -

I think all of the ideas above are fantastic, and believe it or not all have happened in the club at one time or another - definitely a function of leader motivation. I can remember wondering if 8 freshman trips was enough :D

Having an orientation leader in the club is a great resource. Liz Allen (who graduated last year) was an orientation leader and shamelessly plugged the NHOC at every opportunity to our advantage. We used to be able to send out Freshman Trip fliers with other University mailings, but for some reason they don't let us do that anymore (maybe a change in who runs the programs or something). I think it would be a good idea to figure out who on campus mails things to Freshmen other than admissions and see if we can't squeeze our way into other mailings (maybe academic departments, dining, etc).

I can try and be at some of the orientations. I'm not sure right now when I'll be around, but I'll try and let you know.
