BIG TRIP!!

Postby DanBro on Mon Nov 05, 2007 11:26 pm

As far as I know, we still haven't decided on trips for the BIG TRIP yet, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or suggestions for what we should do. We're looking for three trips per day (Sat and Sun).

Early December is a tough season for a Big Trip, because there isn't such a variety of things to do. Basically we have hiking, hiking, or hiking. Unless someone wants to try a climbing trip, but my fingers get cold just thinking about that.

A hike to Lonesome Lake is the most obvious beginner trip from Franky (remember, we'll be differentiating between easy and hard trips, so people can be properly challenged but not overwhelmed).

For more advanced trips, it would be fun to go for one of the nearby peaks. But there may well be snow/ice up there in December, and getting the crampons/boots required to tackle that stuff would be a nightmare on a big trip like this. I think a hike up Cannon would be OK though, because it wouldn't be so exposed compared to Franky ridge. Also, a hike straight up Falling Waters trail would be in the trees almost the whole way, so you could maybe still summit Little Haystack without encountering too much ice.

So I want to go for Cannon and/or Little Haystack. Beyond that, who knows.

I was thinking of franky ridge but if theres snow then its going to be hard to do since it would be a mountaineering trip and we would need crampons boots and axes. So if thats the case then either one of the Kinsmans or up the old bridal path to Mt. Lafayette

We've only got 2 weeks to go before Big Trip so I think we should start finalizing trip ideas and maybe organizing a quick pre-pre-trip meeting just so we arent scrambling the last few days leading up to that weekend.

So I'm leading cross-country skiing with either Phill or Colum, and Kat is our AL. We really need to get all of us together to talk before we do the Big Trip pre-trip, though. Can everyone meet after Business Meeting next Monday? We can choose a time for a pre-trip then, figure out who's calling which participants, decide what trips we're doing, and all that.

Looking forward to your replies on this sweet forum!
